Mission Statement:
Our goal is to connect men to Christ through fellowship and most importantly fishing. Whether you are a pro or just starting, we cordially invite you to participate in our activities. As a ministry of First Baptist Church of Luling, Casting for Christ is an organization run by people who have a deep and profound love for God and love for others. Our mission is to connect people to God through the sport of fishing. So come and be a part of the excitement, and get connected! It’s an opportunity you will not want to miss!
Our Club History:
In the summer of 2004, a group of 5 or 6 members from First Baptist Church of Luling got together to discuss the creation of a fishing club. What was born out of prayer, several meetings and lots of work was Casting for Christ, a Christian fishing club. The club was started to create a way for men to merge their passion for Christ with their passion for fishing. The mission of the club is “Connecting people to Christ through fellowship and fishing”. Although the club was created by members of FBC Luling, it is open to all and church membership is not required.
The group of charter members (a few more were added) drafted a club document to outline the rules of the club. Being a group of men, the idea turned to competition. It was decided that there would be monthly tournaments as part of an overall annual fishing competition. A point system was developed for the different species of fish that the club would target and a schedule of monthly tourneys and fishing locations was created. A list of officers was also created (President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer, Tournament Director, Scorekeeper, and others). The annual schedule officially begins in March and ends in February (there are usually no meetings or fishing tourneys in December and February).
There is a club meeting each month, usually on a Thursday night in preparation for a fishing tournament on Saturday. The club meeting starts with dinner (provided by the club and paid for by donations of members and guests in attendance). We try to have a guest speaker at each meeting along with a devotional. Guest speakers have included local professional fishing guides, a retired Wildlife and Fisheries officer, and others. After the guest speaker and devotional we usually talk fishing and plan the details for the fishing tourney to be held that Saturday. It’s determined how many people will be going fishing and how many boats are available. Boating assignments are usually made by random. This way there is a natural sense of inclusion and fellowship between all. The fishing location usually varies each month or at times is an “open” tournament, where fishermen can fish wherever they want and meet back at a designated time.
The group has successfully held meetings and tourneys continuously since August of 2004 with one break in September 2005 because of Katrina. During that September several members got together instead to help community members put tarps on their roofs. A club website, www.castingforchrist.com, was launched sometime around September 2004.
At the end of each fishing tourney, after the points for each boat’s catch have been tallied, all fishermen usually get together to clean the fish that were caught. All are welcome to take whatever fish home that they want. Whatever is left is placed in a freezer that was paid for by club funds. This fish is used for fundraisers or other church events from time to time. Money is raised from tourney fees as $5 per person for each monthly tournament.
"And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."
